Having lost out in the 2013 and 2019 UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich and Liverpool respectively on penalties, the Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea Football Club needed the heroics of Kepa Arrizabalaga to win their first ever UEFA Super Cup trophy.
After 120 minutes of action with both team deadlocked at 1-1, penalties was all that was needed to separate the two side.
Hakim Ziyech had given the Londoner Club side the lead in the first half, before he got injured and was substituted late in the first half for United States of America midfielder, Christian Pulisic.
Villarreal Football Club of Spain got the deserved equalizer courtesy of Gerard Moreno in the 72nd minutes to send the game into extra time.
Sergio Asenjo in goal for Villarreal made superb saves to help his team push on till the penalty shootout.
Chelsea are however the Super Cup champions after a tense penalty shootout win over Villarreal, thanks to Arrizabalaga.
Kepa was the Blues hero, with the stopper coming off the bench to deny Aissa Mandi and Raul Albiol from 12 yards.
The penalty ended 6-5, to give Chelsea their first ever silverware in the UEFA Super Cup history.
Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League, while Villarreal won the UEFA Europa League defeating Manchester City Football Club and Manchester United Football Club respectively.
Chelsea started Edourd Mendy in goal, Kurt Zouma, Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso and Christian Chalobah started in defense.
Ngolo Kante, Matteo Kovacic, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech were the heart of the midfield with Timo Werner leading the attack.
For Villarreal, Asenjo started in goal, with Raul Albiol, Foyth, Etienne Capoue, Abdoulaye Dia, Marco Pedraza, Gerard Moreno, Yeremy Pino, Alberto Moreno, Triguerros and Pau Torres.
