Nigerian forward Josh Maja has been named the winner of the French Ligue 2 Player of the Month award for October.

The one-cap Super Eagles striker’s outstanding performances for Girondins Bordeaux in Ligue 2 saw him beat Le Havre’s Gautier Lloris and Stade Lavallois’ Julien Maggiotti to the prestigious honour.

Maja has been in excellent form for Bordeaux this term, with the former Sunderland striker netting seven league goals and providing three assists.

The 23-year-old scored two of those goals in October in the 2-1 win at Laval and the 2-0 home triumph over Metz to help Bordeaux secure three victories and one draw In the four matches played during the period.

By picking up the individual prize, Maja becomes the first Bordeaux player to win the league’s best player award this season.

The young centre-forward ends a 13-year jinx at Les Girondins, becoming the first Bordeaux star to take the award since Frenchman Yoann Gourcuff claimed it in April 2009.

Bordeaux were relegated from the French top-flight last season, but the Marines and Whites are on course for an instant return to Ligue 1.

David Guion’s men sit in second place on the league table after eight wins and four draws in 15 matches.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has been named the winner of Global Soccer’s ‘Emerging Player of the Year’ award.

The Napoli man edged Barcelona wonderkid Gavi and Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde to the honour.
