Scott McTominay was impressive in midfield as Manchester United battled to a 3-1 away win over Brentford.

Returning after missing the draw at Villa Park due to suspension, McTominay reminded supporters of his best qualities in helping his side earn a crucial three points.

Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: “Scott McTominay was my man of the match. He was head and shoulders above everybody else.”

He made five successful dribbles, helping United exploit space left by Brentford as they pressed, and move the ball up the pitch.

He completed 89.6 per cent of his passes, the highest of any Manchester United player, and also created one goalscoring chance. He also had one shot on target.

Off the ball McTominay helped out defensively, making four clearances, winning two tackles and making two interceptions.

United needed this type of performance from McTominay in a reworked 4-3-3 formation, with McTominay asked to sit back while Fred and Bruno Fernandes pushed forward.

The Scotland international took it in his stride and his energetic and controlled performance was key to United winning the game.

The only concern was McTominay going off injured in the latter stages, substituted in the 83rd minute.

United will be hoping he is fit enough to start against West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday as he will be key to winning the midfield battle.

Ralf Rangnick did not give an update on his fitness after the game, instead focusing on his performance.

The boss told the club website: “In the second half, Scott, I must say once again, was a real leader. He played with authority and when we needed it most.

“I think that had almost a positively contagious effect on all the other players in the centre of the pitch.”
