West Ham’s Europa League last 16 debut ended in defeat as David Moyes’ side lost 1-0 away at Sevilla.
The Hammers headed to Spain for their first ever knockout stage game in the competition but they now face the prospect of needing to turn the tie around at the London Stadium next week.
Moyes’ side did create the better chances of the opening 45 minutes, with Nikola Vlasic twice denied by Yassine Bono, as the home side struggled to test Alphonse Areola.
However, the one crucial chance which fell Sevilla’s way in the second period was eventually taken, as Munir El Haddadi – who was only in the starting line up due to a warm up injury to Ivan Rakitic – steered home a fine effort from Marcos Acuna’s free kick.
Manuel Lanzini was denied a late equaliser by a goal saving block from Jesus Navas and Moyes will need a big reaction from his players in the second leg.
