In a statement released by Oseni Rufai, a popular Nigerian journalist and an Arise TV co-host and anchor, during the Arise TV News this morning stated that Lagos State is not a Yoruba land.
This statement made by Oseni Rufai has led to a lot of reactions and comments from Nigerians online. Reacting to it, a twitter user with the handle name ‘Paul Itebiye’ commented, “Eko is a Benin term meanin war camp. A Benin prince was the first Oba of Lagos and his successors has always referred to themselves to be from Benin. DAworis n prominent chief/families in Lagos a lineage that can be traced 2 Benin Edo founded Lagos, but the inhabitants own it presently”.
Another twitter user commented, “The Edo Oba referred to met Awori, hinterland Yoruba, Ijebus and invariably some Ijaws in the area from which he formed camps to protect his trade. He later signed treaties with Idejo Chiefs to secure trade routes. He did not found Lagos”.
