Nigerias U-17 girls (Flamingos) are going to India after knocking out Ethiopia in Abuja.
Nigeria’s under 17 women’s football team known as the Flamingoes are through to the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The Flamingos recorded a 1-0 victory away against Ethiopia in the first leg encounter played on Friday, May 20.
The second leg fixture between the two sides took place at the 60,000 capacity MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
The team did it the hard way with a 0-0 draw but were able to secure a ticket to the World Cup in India later this year with an aggregate victory.
After getting a 1-0 victory against Ethiopia at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa, the Flamingos only needed to avoid defeat in the second leg.
The return fixture took place on Saturday, June 4, 2022 with a place at the World Cup at stake.
The Flamingos could not find a breakthrough in the first half as Ethiopia defended well.
In the second half, the Flamingos had chances to score with top scorer through the qualification series Opeyemi Ajakaye.
It turned out to be a difficult contest as Flamingos head coach Bankole Olowookere opted to hold on to their first leg advantage late in the game.
The Flamingos secured a draw and will now participate at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled to take place from Tue, 11 till Sunday, October 30, 2022.
