Senegal has advanced to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since 2002, after defeating Ecuador 2-1 in today’s World Cup match. The African team were in excellent form today and deserved to win.
Senegal started the game well and looked like the team to take all three points. They finally took the lead in the 44th minutes after Sarr won a penalty in the first half when Hincapie fouled him in the 18-yard box. The Watford attacker stepped up to take the penalty and calmly slotted it home.
Ecuador pushed after the break and equalized from a corner when Caicedo tapped in from close range, but Senegal took the lead again three minutes later when Idrissa Gueye’s free-kick deflected to Koulibaly, who volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Ecuador were eliminated from the World Cup after failing to score an equalizer before the final whistle.
Meanwhile, fans have praised Senegal Coach Aliou Cisse for his efforts in shaping the team into what it is presently.
Aliou Cisse captained Senegal to the knockout round of the 2002 World Cup, and now, 20 years later, he has assisted the team in qualifying for the knockout stage of the World Cup. The senegal coach is now only the second person in Africa to qualify for the round of 16 as a player in 2002 and as a coach in 2022, following late Stephen Keshi of Nigeria in 1994 and in 2014.
