After keeping a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, in the first leg victory of the Uefa Champions League round of 16 tie against Lille, Edouard Mendy would’ve come into the second leg of tie in France with the intention of keeping another clean sheet.
Unfortunately for the current best goalkeeper in the world, Lille put the ball in the back of his net to spoil his clean sheet.
Burak Yilmaz, the veteran striker scored from the penalty spot to hand Lille a lead that did not last long.
Chelsea went on to win the match by two goals to one, after Christian Pulisic and Ceaser Azpilicueta scored to complete a brilliant come back.
It was a perfect night for Chelsea except for the fact that Lille’s goal broke one of Edouard Mendy’s superb record in the competition.
Before yesterday, only two players have ever scored against Mendy in the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League.
Mehdi Taremi of Porto and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid were the two players to have scored past Mendy in the knockout.
That goal for Yilmaz meant Mendy’s record of just 2 goals conceded in the knockout stage of the Champions League has turned to 3 goals.
He shouldn’t be too bothered about that as Chelsea have progressed to the quarterfinals, meaning he can continue his phenomenal record and help them win the Champions league again.
